Mafia Wars (Mafia what??)

Filed under: daily, friends, fun — nerdette @ 22:51

Are you on Facebook? Bored as well?
Can I suggest you to have a look at zynga’s Mafia Wars? :)

Or - if you’re part of FaceBook already - click here ;)
Join My Mafia: http://apps.facebook.com/inthemafia/status_invite.php?from=1637737132 :)

so, Mafia Wars: What is it?

In short: Its an online group game where you are going up in levels, doing criminal jobs and fights.
Not as horrible as it sounds, no-one gets hurt. You earn money and skillpoints for doing these things, and in the meanwhile you try to recruit other members to grow your own mafia family. As of now, I’ve got Level 51 52 134183190205 and 270 279 647 923 16752447 Family members. And quite a bunch of (real) friends extra. Or, to rephrase, I got in contact (again) with people I normally rarely speak with.

Mafia Wars: How to play?
This is a short overview of what you get and what to look after while playing this game, as I’ve been asked by several people now. Hope it helps :)

# # # Mafia Wars: the Main Screen: # # #

Mafia Wars - Home screen

- Cash (go to bank)
All the money you own at the moment.
Every 60 minutes you will get your income, which comes from your Properties (see below).
Make sure you always earn a bit more than that your properties cost: some weapons, armor and transport cost money to maintain.

- Bank
Here you can put money in the bank, so that it doesn’t get robbed when you’re attacked. The bank ‘robs’ you as well though, they demand 10% on all cash you put in. Getting money out is for free.

- Health
Will go down when you are attacked or if you attack someone. If you go below 20 health you will be too weak to fight: you have the option to buy new at the hospital. The “get better/hospital” prices go up during the levels, but it’s no big amount and till now available every time I needed it.

- Energy
The more the better. Good thing is that this will add up 1 energy every 3 minutes. With the Godfather points you can buy 1 extra energy for 1 coin.

- Stamina
You need this in fights. Also here you will regain slowly, but it takes the time it takes. Also this you can buy with Godfather points, however it takes 2 coins to get 1 extra Stamina.

- Experience:
Shows a bar and numbers of your current % of experience in this level.

- Level:
Shows your current level. Nice to know when you’ve got to fight other Mafia families.

- Top Families

At the moment lead by Prince Elysion, a Level 4410 Maniac :
You might want to search in here for interesting new family members, if they are open for a request though.

Now the Tabs:

# # # HOME # # #

An overview of all news around you and your Mafia.

You can find here if someone wants to have you in your mafia, who sent you an Energy Pack, what game news there is.

The special Loots are also found here, to buy with the Godfather coins.

Also a short overview of Player updates can be found here: See who tried to rob or attack you (and go for revenge :), whom you helped doing jobs and what money and points you got for that.

An overview of the people you have given Top Mafia status is also listed here.

Plus ofcourse your “Join my Mafia” URL can be found here, with an option to use it for updating your Facebook page.

If you want to be nice to your family, you can send them Energy Packs here. I believe it will not be sent to every member, but just a few members every time. Make sure you click it quite a few times. Sometimes at the right bottom at your “messages” popup it will show who received it.

# # # JOBS # # #
A screenshot here: (Cuba (advanced)

Mafia Wars - jobs (cuba) screen

At the moment there are jobs to be done at 2 locations, New York and Cuba,

You start off with Level1 in New York, then slowly progress while finishing jobs.
You will have to defeat some big bosses during the levels to gain their possessions and the respect from the godfather. If you have completed the levels (all jobs 100% done), you can gain the title of the levels you’ve been through, e.g.:
Level 1-4 is as Street Thug,
Level 5-8 is as Associate
Level 9-12 is as a Soldier,
Level 13-17 is as an Enforcer,
level 18-24 is as a Hitman,
Level 25-34 is as a Capo,
Level 35-59 is as a Consigliere,
etc etc. (update: see at bottom of page for more)

If you have done 200%, you receive the title “Skilled Street Thug”.
Changing your title can be done under the tab “Profile”

All new levels are still “locked” and you will see them only after you have reached and completed several levels.
Cuba will be reachable after you have reached Level 30, you will have to get on the plane to get there.

How to start your jobs?:

You start easy, with Level1 as a Street Thug.
Get enough money to buy what you need, and then see if you can gain a 100% score on the job.
If you have completed a job, you will be rewarded with 1 coin for your profile.
If you have completed a level, you will be rewarded with 5 coins for your profile.
Some jobs have special loots. You can see what a job could bring if you hover your mousecursor over the yellow icon behind it.
Jobs will cost you energy, but will also bring you in a fast way the skill points and money. It will also tell you if you need to have special items to fulfill these jobs.
Some of the items are loots, which you can get with doing other jobs, or can get from your family members.
If you are out of energy, see if someone sent you an energy pack (post it on your FB site), start doing fights or recruit family in the meanwhile.

# # # Fight # # #

- Fight (Take on other Mafias)

Mafia Wars - Attack screenshot

You will be shown a list of people which is in your range of level and “extras”. Try to attack them without losing too much energy or getting too damaged. Your Health and Stamina will go down.
Update from Andy Armo
The basic fight equation (at the moment, Zynga could change this) is (mafia size * total ATT & DEF) + (total weapons ATT and DEF). Add in the top mafia bonus and the dice roll for a critical hit. This means that the most important thing is to get to 501 mafia.
Then adding points to ATT and DEF, lastly getting better weapons. Weapon balance matters a lot since it is the total score, not just ATT, which counts.

You will see if you have won or lost the fight, and with what the battle has been performed.
If won, the page will tell you how much damage you and your enemy got, how much money and how many experience points were gained. A note will be sent out to the person that got attacked saying you did so.

If lost, it will tell you why (critical hit, top mafia member) and how much money you lost.
If it doesn’t tell you why, better don’t attack this person again if the difference between damage to you and him is too big :)
From time to time someone scores a “Critical Hit” , most of the times because they are assigned with a Top Mafia status from their mafia.

To get higher attack scores, upgrade your Attack with Godfather profile points.

Sometimes your mafia members help you out and you can double the score of experience points and money. A note will be sent to these members’ pages if they did so.

Also loots could be discovered, which will be added to your collection.

Not always the “Attack Again” button pops up, if you want to attack again, open the link at the Mafia Membername in a new tab and click “Attack” there.

There is such a thing as mercy - I tend to try someone out for 3 times and then quit, if I won or not.
Also I tend to attack people with same or higher levels (currenty fighting L59!!) and same Mafia size members.
Its rather annoying when you see people with only 20 members or 501(+) members in your attack screen. I prefer to refresh the site then, to see if someone more appropriate shows up.

Ow yes, in the morning when I do discover that some idi*ts have tried to rob, attack and kill me, I happily delegate them to my fellow L400+ Mafia Members :) Don’t mess with Lady Vendette :)

Keep in mind people can attack you as well, hence you need to keep your defence up as well. They can steal money from you which you don’t have on the bank.

I have heard, but not tested yet, that you can improve your fight results if you get rid of the weak weapons, get bigger and nastier weapons with high “attack” points.

- Hitlist (be a hired gun)
If you have been nasty to someone, you can be hitlisted. An amount of money will be gained by the person that will attack you (if he wins) in the name of the person you’ve been bullying. Worse is that they can then also attack and rob you afterwards.
You can find back if you have been hitlisted and attacked in your News bulletin board under Home

Putting someone on the hitlist can be done via the persons Mafia Wars profile page (next to the links to Attack and Rob).
20% fee will be taken off your hitlist reward.

The hitlists go pretty fast, if you check a user before attacking, he/she will be already gone by the time you come back to attack him. Also multiple hitlists exist, so refresh often.
Tip:
- A user without a title doesn’t say anything about his/her level
- Users longer than 1 minute, or with high rewards are most likely difficult to kill
- Remember: most of these users are put on there with a reason. They might come back, but after you this time ;)

- Robbing (damage mafia’s properties)
Just rob someone elses properties, to gain money.
You can see what properties he’s got, as well as how much protection is still left with the little blue shields.
I haven’t tried robbing too often, I got enough money anyway, safely hidden :)

    # # # Inventory # # #

    Inventory:

    Contains the following subtabs:

  • Weapons
  • Preferred is the Chain Gun ; currently 16 Attack and 14 Defense, however an upkeep of -$2.500,- and a price of $200,000 per item.
While going through the levels, more and more levels are unlocked.
Special items earned from jobs are on the Loot page.

  • Armor
  • Preferred is the Body Armor, with an Upkeep of -$400 , 4 Attack, 7 Defense and a (current) price of $16,000
    Also here:
Special items earned from jobs are on the Loot page.

  • Vehicles
  • For now the Town Car looks best; with an Upkeep of -$1,200 , with 10 Attack and 12 Defense, for a (current) price of $400,000.
Fun to see is the Speed Boat, although 0 Attack and 0 Defense, you’ll need it in one job. You might get it via a loot, don’t get rid of it yet.

    And yes, also here:
Special items earned from jobs are on the Loot page.

    # # # Loot # # #
Some jobs, with the yellow questionmark-box, will give you the option to gain something extra.
Also, while attacking some people, you could gain a loot. And there are the loot-gifting apps on Facebook which could give you some extras.
    They can not be bought.

With these loots you can get your collections complete, or get more attack and/or defense power. Be careful with ‘em.

    # # # Collections and Vault # # #
Find 7 of the same item to complete your collections. Collect items by finishing jobs.
These collections, once complete, give you extra stamina, defence, attack points and such.

Within the Loot and the Collections and Vault tabs, you can create your wishlists, to get just that what is missing in your collection, or what you would like to have to better defend yourself. You can publish the Wishlist on your FaceBook screen, so that others are alarmed. Just select the items you want to have with the [+] button under the item you want to have, and click “Share Wishlist with Your Friends”.

    # # # Gifting # # #
Here you can select and send items from your collections and loots to your mafia members. It’s better to give than receive! Send gifts to your mafia, they’ll be sure to return the favor.

I prefer to monitor this on the FaceBook site, mention “en public” what I’ve sent and ask what I’m looking for as well. It sometimes get’s “forgotten” ;)

    # # # Godfather # # #

I tend to evade this bit. I play for free and do not want to buy any coins, how attractive it all sounds.
If you want to buy, read what it says.

    # # # Profile # # #
Here you have a short overview of what you’ve gained so far. Also it mentions how many experience points you still need to have (always good when having an energy box ready, or health and energy just before you go to a next level).

    # # # My Mafia # # #

    Recruit

Here you can recruit people by sending their FaceBook a request.

    My Mafia
Here you can give some of your Mafia Members special jobs; which will give you higher results in your matches:

For your Top Mafia you can select from your mafia members the following Positions:

  • Mastermind
  • Bonus: More Experience from Jobs

  • Wheelman
  • Bonus: Less Energy Required for Jobs

  • Button Man
  • Bonus: Increased Attack

  • Bodyguard
  • Bonus: Increased Defense

  • Safecracker
  • Bonus: More $ from Fights

  • Bagman
  • Bonus: More $ from Jobs

Everyone has got their own Mafiaprofile; you need to click [promote] to see how much % better they are then the current member which occupies this position.

So far some of the things I’ve been through. Now, maybe, the interesting part:

    # # # Some tips and tricks: # # #

    # Money
Although in the first 10 levels important, Money becomes less important in later levels. You will have plenty of it if you do enough jobs.
So, where to invest in then?

    @HOME

Vehicles -> at the HOME page you see a Loot vehicle. They depend on the level and the number of mafia members you have got. They’re rather ok to have.

    Note from Andy Armo:
The special loot buys for $10,000 should be used carefully. They have been messed up by Cuba as well. A weapon must have at least combined 41. An armour at least 46. A vehicle at least 50. The problem here is you can never get rid of them and they get selected for fights first!

Properties -> Mafia Mikes or Undeveloped Space.

    Inventory ->
    - Armor -> Body Armor
    - Weapons -> Chain Gun

    # Profilecoins
Do not increase health with the you can buy health.
What you want to buy is Stamina and Energy, you will need this later.
Keep your Defence and Attack levelled as well.

    # Loots
Some jobs give you goodies for free. They can be used to add to your weapons, armor, transportfleet or even in jobs.
Some goodies are for your collections

    # Collections:
Posst frequently what you need, and keep the wishlist up to date

    # Properties
Do not invest in luxury hotels or big casinos. Also, forget about protecting them.
If you want to do so though, to look big and rich, leave it unprotected. The value will drop, but you will get 30% out of it. After this 30% is reached it can not be robbed empty anymore.

A good way to invest your money is in the plain properties, and buy the Mafia Mikes (depending on the amount of Family you have).

    # Recruit
Or, better, post your “join my mafia” link (found at HOME or at My Mafia in green) everywhere on Facebook. For instance, if you have helped someone out on a job posted via Facebook, comment it with what you earned.
I tend to give it a “I like this” and comment it with my MafiaWars Join-url.
The higher the people in your Mafia Family are levelled, the more advantage you have in your Fights. They must have pretty good weapons though.

    Other interesting links and info:

    Mafia Wars Tool/bookmarks

    http://heartrate.se/

Have a read there and bookmark the tools in your browsers bookmark folder. Its easy to switch from the MafiaProfile from some high Level B* that killed you multiple times to his/her FB profile and become friends (if the ego isn’t that much hurt ;)

    Join some Groups:
You will be spammed by the Mafia “Add Me” groups which people join. No need to name something specific here.
After you have joined, comment with your “Join My Mafia” URL and see how many requests come in.
They have got to be friends in FaceBook first before you can add them, but after they joined your mafia, you can delete them again from your Facebook.
I kept ‘em all in my “MafiaOnly” Facebook group, so I can choose to see their messages or not. Als I am often “joining” them in their fights, gaining a few extra $ and points.

    Pink Listed:
They are apperantyl assumed “spammers” as they recruit many many people for their mafia. Add them as a FB first and then send them your Join link, as they can not send out any more requests.
They’re great to have, big families and muchos stuff :)

    Recruitment tip:
Make a fake account on FB and therefor a fake account on MW. Use the sexiest woman you can find as profile pic and start recruiting :)
no, not my say, nor did I say something about putting someone on hitlists and kill ‘em with the other account, nor about giving loots . I only heard this from others doing so.

    # # # Cuba info # # #

Zynga has improved game play with the addition of Facebook’s Mafia Wars Cuba. Players can now fly to Cuba and advance their mafia in a new country. The game plays the same as it does in NY with new levels to complete and new collections to hunt.
One important aspect of Cuba that players need to remember is that their US money is no good in Cuba and can’t be exchanged. Players have to start earning Cuban money before they can purchase anything in Cuba. Jobs in Cuba pay not only money and experience points but also what is called bribe money. This money will be needed later on in game play.

    New Levels
The new levels of game play in Cuba also have loot drops associated with them and collections that can be vaulted just like the collections in NY. Players can gift items in Cuba just as they do in NY. The titles and associated levels for Cuba are as follows:

    • El Soldado Levels 35-39
    • El Capitan Levels 60-84
    • El Jefe Levels 85-109
    • El Patron Levels 110-129
    • El Padrino Levels 130+

Each level has tiers, just like in NY. These tiers are called Experto and Prinicpal. For example, El Soldado has the original level, El Soldado; next would be El Soldado Experto; and finally El Soldado Principal. Each level of achievement completed brings with it an added bonus.

    Loot Drops
Jobs in Cuba have loot drops just as they do in NY. Some of these are necessary to complete jobs in upper levels and some are just added weapons or vehicles that increase character profiles. The loot drops are as follows:

    • El Soldado - Intimidate the Locals - Street Gang Member
    • El Soldado - Smuggle in Some Supplies - Garza 9
    • El Soldado - Establish Contact with the FRG - RA-92
    • El Soldado - Assault a Snitch’s Hideout - Mara Serpiente
    • El Capitan - Transport a Shipment of US Arms - M16A1
    • El Capitan - Meet with the FRG Leadership - Camouflage Body Armour
    • El Capitan - Ambush a Military Patrol - Chucho FAV
    • El Capitan - Capture an Army Outpost - RU-38
    • El Capitan - Ransack a Local Plantation - Cane Knife
    • El Capitan - Burn Down a Hacienda - Ocelot Armored Truck
    • El Jefe - Shake Down a Hotel Owner - Montaine 300
    • El Jefe - Help the FRG Steal a Truckload of Weapons - Para 322
    • El Jefe - Pillage a Shipyard - Gaff Hook
    • El Jefe - Take Over the Docks - Cigarette Boat
    • El Patron - Pass on Some Intel to the FRG - ASC 45 “Conquistador”
    • El Patron - Sink a Competing Smugglers Ship - Mini Sub
    • El Patron - Assassinate an Opposing Consigliere - Aquila HV .50 Sniper Rifle
    • El Padrino - Raid the Arms Depot - TNT
    • El Padrino - Supply the FRG with Some Extra Muscle - Guerilla Squad
    • El Padrino - Capture the Airport - Si-14 Cargo Plane
    • El Padrino - Attack the Army Command Post - HU-9 Helicopter
    • El Padrino - Storm the Presidential Palace - Armored State Car

The loot drops in Cuba become vital to game play due to the number of items needed to complete some of the jobs.
Mafia Wars Cuba is still in Beta and only being played by a portion of Mafia Wars players. Game play in Cuba is subject to change as the creators add to or modify the way it is played. Players can stay abreast of new game play and interact with other players while growing their family at Mafia Masters, the website devoted to Mafia Wars top players.

Facebook Mafia War players are constantly on a quest to acquire more money, power, weapons and the randomly dropped special loot items. Often, special looted items are required to perform jobs. Frustration soon ensues because there is no visible way of knowing how to get that random loot drops. Until now that is. The Mob bosses have revealed Mafia War secrets for adding items to the family bounty.

Through hours of play a listing of jobs that have random loot drops and what that loot is has been compiled. Doing the job may not always result in the loot being dropped on the first time, but what is listed is what was consistently dropped for the noted job.

    Random Loot Drops
Jobs that advertise random loot drops are useful for acquiring necessary weapons or other specialty items needed for other jobs and hits. This listing of jobs and associated random loot drops should be a great asset in further advancement in the mafia world.
This list is set up with the loot that is dropped followed by the job that is done to acquire it.

    • Stab-Proof Vest - Kill A Protected Snitch
    • Bodyguards - Protect Your City Against A Rival Family
    • Night Vision Goggles - Assassinate A Political Figure
    • Armored Truck - Smuggle Across The Border
    • Armored Car - Invade Tong-Controlled Neighborhood
    • Bullet-Proof Bentley - Win 20,000 Chips In Mafia Wars Poker
    • .22 Pistol - Beat Up Rival Gangster
    • Butterfly Knife - Collect Protection Money
    • Brass Knuckles - Rough Up Dealers
    • 9mm Semi-Automatic - Rob A Pimp
    • .45 Revolver - Take Out A Rouge Cop
    • Tactical Shotgun - Perform a Hit
    • C-4 - Destroy Enemy Mon Hideout
    • Automatic Rifle - Bust a Made Man Out of Prison
    • Semi-Automatic Shotgun - Fight a Haitian Gang
    • Grenade Launcher - Repel the Yakuza
    • .50 Caliber Rifle - Disrupt Rival Smuggling Ring
    • RGP Launcher - Sell Guns to Russian Mob
    • Napalm Attack - Exterminate a Rival Family

Keep in mind that doing a job does not always insure that loot will be dropped. Somtimes the job has to be done more than one time.

    # # # What is http://www.mafia-wars.info/ good for?

In case you are interested how good your score is when it comes to your “Attack”weapons, “Defense” armor, and what your family does for you; then you might be interested in using http://www.mafia-wars.info/ for that.
    It’s easy:

    1) attack someone
    2) copy the whole screen of text with the result, from “Your Mafia of 501 fought against..” until the very bottom of that block, including the “you WON the fight.. “
    3) paste this in the field “Combat Results” in http://www.mafia-wars.info/
    4) enter your Attack, Defense and Level as well as your victims Level and press “Calculate”

The screen that shows up next will tell you where you are compared to the average mafia members on your level, how much strength your Weapons and Armor has got, and where you could improve.

Some general, but very interesting information:

From level 99 onwards your ’stock’ weapon should be upgraded from the Chain Gun [16, 14] to the Bonus Weapon [20, 20] or you can purchase weapons through the Godfather Limited Edition Loot offers.

    Weapons
For the Mafia Wars Cuba expansion, TNT [42, 20] is extremely powerful and still quite easy to find. Aguila HV .50 Sniper Rifles [40,16] are very good too. You should also collect Gaff Hooks [20, 30] for your defensive setup.

    Armor
The ’stock’ armor for combat is the Body Armor [4, 7], but you should focus on doing jobs that will give you something better. Avoid too many Night Vision Goggles [5, 16], while these are certainly better than Body Armor, you would be better off with more Bodyguards [8, 25]. Excluding the occasional Godfather offer, the best armor is currently the Federal Agent [15, 25] but these are more difficult to acquire, so you may want to focus your efforts on the Bodyguards.

For the Mafia Wars Cuba expansion, the Guerrilla Squad [34, 30] is better than anything in the original game and relatively easy to find.

    Vehicles
The ’stock’ vehicle for combat is the Towncar [10, 12] but you will want to try to improve on these. Humvees [26, 22] are good for attack, Private Jets [12, 38] for defence, and both drop fairly regularly when doing Jobs. Armored Limosines [16, 36] are great, but difficult to find because you need to use Illegal Documents.

For the Mafia Wars Cuba expansion, the Hu-9 Helicopter [36, 27] and Armored State Car [30, 38] are a huge improvement on the original vehicles.
